CRITICAL ZONE ENGINEERING AND SUSTAINABLE GRID INFRASTRUCTURE
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Pratt School of Engineering at Duke University invite applicants for a tenure-track faculty position. The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Duke currently includes a diverse faculty of 20 tenured or tenure-track faculty members with primary appointments in CEE. Civil and Environmental programs at Duke are highly ranked, most notably with Environmental Science and Engineering ranking #11 in the world (Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities in 2016).
We anticipate hiring at the Assistant Professor level, although truly exceptional candidates may be suitable at the level of Associate or Full Professor. Applicants whose work bridges several research areas and who envision cross-departmental collaborations are particularly encouraged to apply.
Theoretical and applied aspects of engineering the Critical Zone (CZ) is one such collaborative area of particular interest. The CZ is defined by the National Research Council as the surface zone of the Earth extending from the outer limits of vegetation down to soil and groundwater masses, within which all forms of life are supported, food is produced, and critical infrastructure is engineered. Examples of specific topics of interest include: engineered systems for grid and life-line underground and surface infrastructure; urban underground engineering, particularly as related to its adaptation to climate change and resulting developments in design and operation at the energy-water-climate nexus; coupled-processes (physico-chemical) in geo-mechanics with application to energy production, energy storage, waste storage/disposal (including CO2 and nuclear wastes), and environmental protection; extraction and management of energy, water, and mineral resources; new or emerging materials with application to infrastructure and renewable energy and water resources; environmental transport phenomena and groundwater transport; multiphase, bio- and geo-interface flows coupled with soil mechanics.
Candidates are expected to have a doctoral degree in: civil, environmental, mining or mechanical engineering, applied chemistry, systems analysis, or similarly pertinent disciplines. Once hired, the successful candidate will be expected to develop and teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, to obtain competitive external funding, to establish a vibrant research program, and to contribute through service to the welfare of the department and to the promotion of their discipline.
