The Earth Institute, Columbia University's largest research institution, invites nominations and applications for the position of Director. Operating at the intersection of geophysics, climate science, engineering, social science, development and public health and public policy, the Earth Institute is recognized worldwide as a leader in defining and addressing the challenges facing humanity in this era of climate change, resource depletion and economic and environmental stress.

The mission of the Earth Institute is to develop programs of research, education and outreach and to promote the practical application of knowledge to address the critical issue of global sustainability, while supporting Columbia University's goals to advance knowledge and learning at the highest level and to convey the products of its efforts to the world.

The Director of the Earth Institute guides its agenda and provides intellectual and organizational leadership to all of its strategic priorities. The ideal candidate will be a true citizen of the world who understands the critical challenges confronting the planet as well as the people who inhabit it today and who will inhabit it in the future. He/she must have the ability to envision and craft an ongoing vision for the Institute and to unify a diverse collection of academics, students and researchers in support of it. The ideal candidate will possess exceptional fundraising skills and the ability to connect with a variety of funders including corporations, foundations, research organizations, private individuals and government funders.
