The Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering invites applications for one tenure-track faculty position at the assistant/associate professor level with an expected start date of August 2017. An earned Ph.D. from an environmental engineering, civil engineering, or related discipline(s) and evidence or potential for national prominence through superior scholarship, externally funded research, teaching excellence, and the ability to teach and mentor underrepresented groups is required. A successful candidate will be expected to lead a team of graduate students in Ph.D. research and teach undergraduate and graduate level courses in civil/environmental engineering that should include the field of sustainable development science and engineering. We are looking for individuals that contribute to our successes in global sustainability; water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) and humanitarian engineering; resource recovery from anthropogenic wastes; and systems and life cycle thinking applied to the water-energy-food nexus. The successful faculty candidate should fit into one or more of these themes and have expertise in one or more of the following areas: WASH, complex system modeling, entrepreneurship and business development, evaluation of health risks from exposure to emerging pathogens, and valuing socioeconomic implications of emerging technologies and environmental systems.
The Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at the University of South Florida includes 32 faculty and approximately 270 junior and senior undergraduate students and 180 graduate students. Three NSF CAREER awardees are members of the department’s environmental and water resources group. Faculty have the opportunity to collaborate with the EPA funded National Center for Reinventing Aging Infrastructure for Nutrient Management; Center for Modeling Hydrologic and Aquatic Systems; USF Water Institute; Clean Energy Research Center, Patel College of Global Sustainability, and RECLAIM, a global network of researchers and practitioners dedicated to developing geographically appropriate and culturally relevant engineered systems to recover nutrient, energy, and water resources from waste. There are strong inter-departmental partnerships existing with the U.S. Peace Corps and other nongovernmental organizations through a PC Fellows program and a graduate concentration in International Development Engineering program that engages Global Health and Applied Anthropology; UNESCO-IHE, the largest international graduate water education facility in the world; and, other international partners. In addition, the World Health Organization has designated the USF College of Public Health as a WHO Collaborating Center for Social Marketing and Social Change to address non-communicable diseases. Also, the Global Citizens Project at the University of South Florida is a university-wide initiative aimed at enhancing undergraduate students' global competencies through the development of new and improved curricular and co-curricular experiences.
