The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Michigan Tech, is seeking applicants for a tenure-track position in surface water quality at the Assistant Professor level to begin Fall 2017.  The successful candidate will develop and maintain an externally-funded research program that complements existing departmental strengths, to teach undergraduate courses in the environmental engineering curriculum, to develop a graduate course in her/his area of specialization, to supervise and mentor graduate students, and to be involved in department, university, and professional service.  A PhD in environmental engineering or sciences, broadly considered (e.g., aquatic ecology, lake and river remediation and restoration, limnology, water quality modeling) is required.

The environmental engineering program in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering graduates about 50 B.S. students and about 30 M.S. and Ph.D. students each year.  Currently, faculty are involved in research in environmental transport and fate of pollutants,  lake biogeochemistry, atmosphere/water interactions, water resource management,  physical-chemical-biological treatment processes, groundwater remediation, and climate change using approaches ranging from modeling to observations to experimentation.  The department’s Water Resources group bridges the environmental and civil engineering programs and conducts research on water management, hydrology, river scour, and climate change.  Considerable collaboration occurs across campus with faculty in Biology, Chemistry, Forestry & Environmental Sciences, Social Sciences, Geology and other disciplines.  A variety of interdisciplinary centers on campus facilitate such collaboration (e.g., Great Lakes Research Center, Ecosystem Sciences Center, the Sustainable Futures Institute, Earth, Planetary and Space Sciences Center).  The Great Lakes Research Center (GLRC), located on the campus waterfront, offers faculty access to research vessels, tethered and autonomous subsurface vehicles, and a suite of shared-use laboratories and instrumentation.  Several department faculty maintain offices and laboratories in the GLRC.  The Center for Science and Environmental Outreach (CSEO), located in the GLRC and administered through the CEE department, hosts 10,000-15,000 K-12 and community guests annually, and offers faculty the opportunity for collaboration in designing outreach programs in environmentally-oriented STEM topics.

Applicants must submit a letter of interest, a complete curriculum vitae, a research statement, a teaching statement, and three professional references.  The research statement must indicate how the candidate will bring intellectual diversity to the Department, develop an active research program, and promote diversity in graduate education; the teaching statement should address which departmental courses the applicant might teach, courses the applicant would propose to develop (particularly at the graduate level), and ways that the applicant’s teaching covers a breadth of perspectives or ways of knowing and learning.  Screening will begin in January and continue until the position is filled.
