Job Description:

Postdoctoral Scholar Position in Anammox Bioprocesses and Biofilm Mechanical Properties

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Northwestern University invites applications for a postdoctoral scholar position.  The successful candidate will to contribute to and oversee an ongoing research project related to mainstream application of anammox bioprocesses for resource efficient nitrogen removal and resource recovery from municipal wastewater. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to contribute to a new related project on characterization of mechanical/ material properties of mixed-culture biofilms.    In addition to independent research activities, the candidate will supervise graduate students, prepare project reports and journal articles, and communicate results at national and international conferences.

Qualifications: A Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Microbiology, or related fields is required.  The following skills are desirable but not required in the ideal candidate: 1) experience in the design and operation of mixed-culture microbial bioreactors, particularly with N-cycling microbial populations; 2) knowledge of microscopic imaging modalities (CLSM, OCT, FISH, etc.) and image analysis techniques applicable to biofilm or microbial aggregate characterization; and 3) mathematical biofilm or bioprocess modeling.  Knowledge and experience with molecular tools for profiling microbial communities (shotgun metagenomics/metatranscriptomics,  amplicon-based DNA sequencing, qPCR) is a plus.  This project involves field work at a nearby water reclamation plant.

The anticipated starting date for the position is in June or July 2017, or as soon as a suitable candidate is identified thereafter.  Applications will be reviewed as received with an interest in an early appointment.  The initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of extending to a second year depending on performance and availability of funds. The salary is negotiable, commensurate with experience and qualifications.  To apply, please email a cover letter describing research experience and interests, a curriculum vitae, the names and contact information of three references, and if available 2 representative peer-reviewed publications to George Wells at george.wells@northwestern.edu.
