General Description

The Faculty of Engineering is looking for a Director for the Advanced Research in Urban Waste Management to join the Engineering team in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

Reporting directly to the Director, the Operations Manager will be primarily responsible to support centre projects and program operations. In this capacity, the Operations Manager is expected to provide expertise in the procurement and execution of multiple projects related to applied research and development in the areas of wastewater and solid waste management in a university environment.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  • Development and evaluation of initial research projects, high level technology evaluation/screening, coordination of research programs and supervision of Laboratory Technicians
  • Collaborates with Director and other staff to set annual goals, objectives and activities
  • Prepare and present to clients, technical correspondence, project proposals, reports, work plans, and  project specifications including cost estimates and budgets
  • Use sound project management tools to ensure projects are planned, executed, and delivered on time, within budget, of high quality, and to the satisfaction of the client
  • Ensure documentation of intellectual capacity is captured for use (i.e. maintenance of library and digital resources)
  • Plan, execute, and report on engineering projects
  • Disseminate new knowledge through the writing and/or detailed technical review of research papers, conference papers, patent applications and marketing materials
  • Present research results in laboratory meetings, client meetings, seminars, scientific conferences and/or related settings
  • Provide technical support in the design, commissioning and operation of laboratory, pilot and demonstration-scale facilities and equipment, while ensuring compliance with relevant industry specifications
  • Interpret study results and environmental regulations to successfully meet the client requirements
  • Attend and provide support at project and other meetings, including meeting setup and preparation of summaries
  • Provide technical guidance, supervision and mentoring for junior staff, including students
  • Provide assistance in the planning and implementation of events relating to networking, research, education and training, and business development
  • Promote the centre as a research and development hub for entrepreneurism and innovation
  • Leads recruitment, training of new staff if/as required; provides daily supervision, monitoring of work one-on-one
  • Administers disciplinary action; completes annual evaluation; recommends training/professional development; approve vacations/absences
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Director


  • MSc specializing in Environmental Engineering or related field; PhD degree in Environmental Engineering is considered a strong asset
  • A minimum of five to ten years direct experience in engineering in wastewater and solid waste management; research experience is considered an asset
  • Registered (or eligible for registration) as a professional with APEGA
  • Self-starter, results -focused, independent and a flexible team player who is willing and able to work on a wide variety of projects
  • Demonstrated capability to conduct and supervise laboratory and field investigations
  • Strong in client service; comfortable working with clients and potential clients to build trust, credibility and rapport leading to a long-term relationship with the centre
  • Ability to see the bigger picture and the details simultaneously
  • Strong time management, project planning, ability to adjust plans/efforts to meet new priorities 
  • Strong technical writing and verbal communication skills; ability to communicate effectively with clients in academic, industry, and government sectors in diverse disciplines, with diverse audiences
  • Supervisory, project management and client management experience
  • Excellent public speaking and community engagement skills
  • Strong analytical, research and problem-solving skills
  • Comprehensive knowledge of health and safety procedures
  • Knowledge of relevant provincial and federal waste and wastewater guidelines and regulations
  • Knowledge of current and relevant research in the field of wastewater and/or solid waste management

In accordance with the Trust/Research Academic Staff Agreement, this position has a term of 1 year, with the possibility of extension, and offers an annual salary range of $58,210 to $80,050 and a comprehensive benefits package found at www.hrs.ualberta.ca.
