Doctoral degree (or foreign equivalent) in Environmental Engineering, Plant or Soil Sciences, Environmental Sciences or closely related field. Three (3) years of research experience in designing, executing and/or managing nutrient recovery and/or re-use projects, to include at least one year of research experience following attainment of a Doctoral degree or foreign equivalent.
Demonstrated skills designing and developing technologies and/or methods for nutrient recovery and/or re-use from wastewater or other water sources. Demonstrated skills in project management, inclusive of providing team leadership, working within a budget and achieving milestones in a timely fashion. Strong analytical skills. PE license or EIT (engineering in training).
Brief Description of Duties:
The https://www.stonybrook.edu/cleanwater/ (CCWT) at Stony Brook University seeks a full-time Research Scientist to research, design, development, test and commercialize nutrient recovery and re-use strategies. The selected candidate will work under the strategic direction of the Center's Senior Research Scientist and collaborate with a team of staff, faculty researchers and graduate students.
The Research Scientist will collaboratively deliver functioning cost-effective, practical N and P removing technologies for onsite wastewater treatment systems (OWTS) capable of achieving market penetration in New York State. The successful candidate works within a Quality Assurance Project Plan in accordance with the United States Environmental Protection Agency standards. In addition, the successful candidate will participate in consulting and collaborating with communities to address onsite wastewater loading issues and N mitigation, and identify opportunities for collaborating with existing IA manufacturers, local governments within NYS and/or other organizations to test N removal achieved by standard and innovative/alternative (I/A) OWTS systems. The appointed candidate will be capable of working independently but also be part of an interdisciplinary team of researchers and staff. Excellent communication skills are essential.
- Investigate, develop, test, and refine designs for N-removal and P-removal and re-use in onsite wastewater treatment systems including both soil-based and modular based systems.
- Assist with grant writing, writing scientific manuscripts, drafting technical and progress reports to sponsor agencies
- Administrative duties including maintaining Quality Assurance Project Plans.

The Research Foundation of SUNY is a private educational corporation. Employment is subject to the Research Foundation policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines and the availability of funding.
