Job Description

Dr. Huiyun Wu’s Microbial Water Quality Lab that is located in the Department of Civil and Environmental at the Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture, is seeking a motivated PhD student to join our group. This opportunity is ideal for a candidate with a strong interests and background in health-related microbiology, molecular microbiology, and bioinformatics. The PhD student will engage in research projects focused on microbial water quality, including areas such as the detection of waterborne pathogens, investigation of microbial surrogates, wastewater-based surveillance, water reuse, and phage studies. The research will include studies on advancing sample processing and molecular methods for water reuse, characterizing microbiomes for aging water infrastructure, enhancing water quality protection in repones to extreme weather events.

Preferred Qualifications or Interests in Learning:

  • MS in engineering or similar discipline (e.g., environmental engineering, microbiology, or biochemistry). Students with a bachelor’s degree may be considered with relevant work experience.
  • Previous coursework that includes Laboratory in Genomics and Molecular Genetics, Metagenomics, fluid dynamics.
  • Prior experience with water quality modeling, particularly with tools such as GIS and SWAT.
  • Prior experience with HPC and Unix.
  • Proficiency in a coding language (e.g., R, python).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

This is a funded position with a competitive stiped that includes full tuition remission. The applicant will be expected to relocate to Pullman, WA. Pullman is a city in Pacific Northwest, with easy access to outdoor sports and national parks. The WSU CEE department has a rich history of outstanding research and engineering practice in water quality, hydrology, and natural environment preservation and protection. The Wu Lab is in the PACCAR Environmental Technology Building, a hub of interdisciplinary research and education and a Certified LEED New Construction Gold. We have direct access to qPCR, BSL2, BSL 2+ labs, Illumina Sequencing, PacBio Sequencing, and genotyping.
