Job Description: 

The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) operates in a dynamic and challenging environment. PHMSA's mission is to protect people and the environment by advancing the safe transportation of energy and other hazardous materials that are essential to our daily lives. To do this, the agency establishes national policy, sets and enforces standards, educates, and conducts research to prevent incidents.

This position is perfect for an experienced engineer or physical scientist who is looking for challenging assignments in pipeline research and development (R&D) and climate change initiatives. The ideal candidate will also serve as PHMSA’s Office of Pipeline Safety subject matter expert (SME) on pipeline safety R&D projects related to climate solutions, greenhouse gas emissions, alternative fuels, and pipeline leak reduction or elimination. The ideal candidate will evaluate research topics that identify and test technology-based processes and activities to prevent safety and environmental hazards; assess alternative fuels that impact climate change and air quality on a national level; and analyze data to pinpoint safety issues and make recommendations on programmatic solutions.
