Call for Papers on Special Issue: Environmental risk assessment and challenges in managing of emerging environmental pollutants

The prestigious journal Chemosphere (IF 5.778) (ISSN 0045-6535) is currently running a special issue entitled "Environmental risk assessment and challenges in managing of emerging environmental pollutants". As we are acting as guest editors for this issue, we would like to welcome contributions from various disciplines. We kindly invite you to consider submitting your full paper to this special issue.

Submission Period: 5th October, 2021 -30th May 2022

Emerging contaminants are mostly new substances and most of them are unregulated or inadequately regulated. Environmental pollution associated with these emerging contaminants has identified as global environmental issues due to its toxicity to biotic communities. The emerging contaminants includes but not limited to rare earth elements, micro and nano-plastics, nanoparticles, antibiotics, PFASs, pharmaceuticals and personal care products, and illicit drugs, etc. Most these emerging pollutants discharged into the wastewater and are only partially removed by wastewater treatment plants. Indeed, many of these contaminants can still exert toxic effects even at very low concentrations (ng/L or even lower) and their environmental occurrence might still be hardly detectable. This is even more challenging for physical contaminants at the micro- and nano-scale. To date, the fate, transport, and their toxicity still remains unclear, especially for the emerging pollutants.

It's important and urgent to systematically assess the risks including both human health and ecological risk brought by various emerging contaminants detected in water reuse system. Moreover, the processes and interactions with biological systems that drive toxic effects are still poorly understood and available data are sometimes contradictory. Therefore, it is very meaningful to understand the environmental behaviors, toxicity and developments in remediation technologies to control the exposure risks of these pollutants in ecosystems. This special issue would provide a window to show some study efforts in the aforesaid fields.

The specific topics of the special issue are:

  • Occurrence and measurements techniques of the emerging environmental pollutants
  • Fate and transport
  • Environmental risk assessments of the pollutants
  • Toxicology studies associated with the emerging pollutants
  • Remediation technologies involved the treatment and removal of the pollutants
