Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

The Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering, jointly administered by the College of Engineering and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Iowa State University, invites applications for the position of assistant professor with research interests in forward-looking areas of watershed modeling and nonpoint source water quality. The faculty member will be expected to actively collaborate across interdepartmental and interdisciplinary teams. Candidates should have proven track record in teaching, research, and service. This is a 9-month position with potential for summer funding.

Successful candidates will be expected to build a world-class research program that will promote balanced and sustainable agroecosystems and provide environmental solutions to agricultural and other stakeholders. Their research program will complement and expand current ABE research strengths, which could include but need not be not limited to: 1) watershed scale, water quality modeling and GIS/spatial analysis, including impacts of future climate projections on agroecosystems and climate-smart mitigation strategies; or 2) phosphorus fate and transport, watershed scale phosphorus modeling, and development of conservation practices to mitigate phosphorus from nonpoint sources.  Additionally, the candidate is expected to develop a record of scholarship at the highest levels, teach highly-engaging courses in the top-ranked undergraduate and graduate degree programs, and participate in institutional service as well as service to the profession.  Candidates should have strong communication skills, share our commitment to enhancing excellence through diversity and inclusion, and exhibit the potential for long-term leadership in supporting the mission of the department, both colleges, and university.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • Candidates must hold an earned Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering, Ecological Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Water Resources Engineering or a related field by the start of employment.
  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • A compelling research agenda aligned with the position description that complements existing strengths in the department and University
  • Demonstrated ability or potential to excel in writing, submitting, and administration of research proposals for state, federal, non-profit and/or industrial sponsors.
  • Record of research excellence as evidenced by highly cited refereed journal and conference publications, and/or intellectual property creation and entrepreneurship.
  • Evidence of a commitment to diversity and inclusion.
  • Demonstrated potential for teaching core undergraduate courses in Agricultural Engineering, Biological Systems Engineering, and/or Agricultural Systems Technology as well as undergraduate and/or graduate courses aligned with our environmental degree options.
  • Evidence of successful supervising and mentoring of graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Leadership experience in academic or professional organizations.

The Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering offers accredited B.S. degree programs in Industrial Technology, Agricultural Systems Technology, Agricultural Engineering, and Biological Systems Engineering, as well as MS and PhD programs in Industrial and Agricultural Technology, and MEng, MS, and PhD programs in Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering.
