Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):

Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Environmental Engineering, Chemistry, or related fields. Four (4) years of responsible related research activities. In lieu of degree a combination of higher education and experience totaling eight (8) years may be considered. Working knowledge of the principles and practices of designing /engineering commercially adopted wastewater technology and the ability to apply such knowledge in the independent performance of fact-finding phases of research projects.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Environmental Engineering, Chemistry, or related fields. Demonstrated skills designing and developing technologies for removing phosphorus (P) in wastewater technologies. Demonstrated skills in project management, inclusive of providing team leadership, working within a budget and achieving milestones in a timely fashion. Experience in the process of transitioning a technology from the research and development phase to commercialization. Strong analytical skills. PE license or EIT (engineering in training).

Brief Description of Duties:

The NYS Center for Clean Water Technology (CCWT) at Stony Brook University seeks a full-time Senior Research Engineer related to the research, design, development, testing and commercialization of improved septic and wastewater treatment systems to remove phosphorus. The selected candidate will work under the strategic direction of the Center's Associate Director for Phosphorus Initiatives and collaborate with a team of staff, faculty researchers and graduate students.

The Research Engineer will collaboratively deliver functioning cost-effective, practical P removing technologies for onsite wastewater treatment systems (OWTS) capable of achieving market penetration in New York State. The Research Engineer will determine optimal solutions for the development of P removal modules, P recovery, and P removal with barrier technology in New York State. The successful candidate works within a Quality Assurance Project Plan in accordance with the United States Environmental Protection Agency standards. In addition, the successful candidate will participate in consulting and collaborating with communities to address onsite wastewater loading issues and P mitigation, and identify opportunities for collaborating with existing IA manufacturers, local governments within NYS and/or other organizations to test P removal achieved by standard and innovative/alternative (I/A) OWTS systems. The appointed candidate will be capable of working independently but also be part of an interdisciplinary team of researchers and staff. Excellent communication skills are essential.

Duties:

  • Investigate, develop, test, and refine designs for P-removal and re-use in onsite wastewater treatment systems including both soil-based and modular based systems.
  • Coordinate with a research team to investigate mobilization of P from standard septic systems in soils and research P recovery technologies for P removal and re-use.
  • Assist with grant writing, drafting technical and progress reports to sponsor agencies.
  • Administrative duties include maintaining a Quality Assurance Project Plans, hiring personnel and ordering supplies and equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Special Notes:

The Research Foundation of SUNY is a private educational corporation. Employment is subject to the Research Foundation policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines and the availability of funding. This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
