Job Description

The Alvarez-Cohen lab in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley (UCB) is seeking a Postdoctoral Scholar with expertise in environmental microbiology and/or environmental chemistry. The scholar will work with funding agencies (National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) and Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP)) focused on projects exploring the biotransformation of environmental contaminants, especially per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and other highly halogenated compounds. This work will apply molecular biology, environmental chemistry, protein engineering, enrichment microcosm experiments, and high-throughput assays to identify aerobic and anaerobic microbial enzymatic-radical systems for successfully treating PFAS and similar pollutants. In addition, the Postdoctoral Scholar will perform team-based and individual research, oversee laboratory activities, mentor students, present at national conferences, prepare results for publication and assist with grant writing.

Preferred qualifications include experience with: microbial metagenomics, transcriptomics, and/or metabolomics; soil biogeochemistry; redox chemistry, and analytical techniques including gas/liquid chromatography and mass spectroscopy (e.g. GC-FID, HRMS, QToF-MS, LC-MS/MS).
