Removal of PFAS from water using engineered biochar

The USDA-ARS United States Salinity Laboratory in Riverside, CA, is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate for a two-year appointment. A PhD awarded in the last 4 years is required. Appointments are typically made at the GS-11 level ($80,015 to $104,016 per year) and are eligible for Federal Employee Retirement System (FERS), Federal Employee Group Life Insurance program (FEGLI), Federal Employee Health Benefits (FEHB) program, and the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP). Citizenship restrictions apply.

The incumbent will work independently as well as part of a small team to develop and test biochar-based polishing systems for removing PFAS compounds from treated wastewater. The ideal candidate will possess (i) knowledge of the fate, transport, and analysis (LC-MS/MS) of emerging organic contaminants in agricultural systems; (ii) an understanding of the use of biochar as an adsorbent for organic contaminants; and (iii) experience in conducting laboratory-, greenhouse-, and field-scale studies.
