A research assistant position for a PhD student is available in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Michigan State University under the supervision of Prof. Irene Xagoraraki to study environmental surveillance for prediction of infectious outbreaks. The PhD student will work on a funded project focused on identification and prediction of outbreaks in the City of Detroit and Wayne, Macomb and Oakland Counties. This is a highly collaborative project with the local health departments, the Great Lakes Water Authority, and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. This position will involve lab work and computational analyses, and the ideal candidate will have strong molecular microbiology and bioinformatics skills.
Required Degree:
MS degree in Environmental Engineering or other Engineering field
Minimum Requirements:
• BS and MS degrees in Environmental Engineering or other Engineering discipline
• Significant experience in molecular microbiology laboratory work
• Strong oral and written communication skills
• Ability to work well in a team setting and be highly self-motivated.
Desired Qualifications:
Strong molecular microbiology and bioinformatics analysis skills
MS degree from US institution
