A Postdoctoral Scientist position is anticipated at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The individual will explore novel techniques for removing vent stream fumigants used for sterilization of buildings and commodities in international trade. The current interest is sulfuryl fluoride, a potent greenhouse gas. The research will focus on a patent-pending, peroxide-based process as well as other chemical approaches for scrubbing this gas from vent streams. We are seeking a creative and independent individual with a strong background in chemical engineering and chemistry who will conduct original research, provide progress reports, write and submit manuscripts for publication, present results at scientific conferences, and coordinate efforts with other collaborating institutions connected with different aspects of the project. The individual will carry out exploratory bench-scale tests and then scale up systems to develop commercial potential. A main objective will be to optimize conditions and establish underlying mechanisms. The candidate must have a Ph.D. degree in chemical engineering, environmental engineering, chemistry, or related discipline. Helpful will be experience in catalysis, hydrolysis, redox reactions, working with gaseous reagents, and analytical techniques. Applicants must have demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills, be able to provide a coherent and well-organized presentation of their past work and have a strong publication record. The appointment is for about one and a half years. Salary and benefits are competitive.
