The Niu Lab at the University of Cincinnati is recruiting 1~2 doctoral students in the area of contaminant chemistry, with an expected start date in Fall 2024. This solicitation specifically looks for candidates to work on the following directions:
a. Environmental/organic photochemistry. The student is expected to be familiar with reaction kinetics and be able to analyze samples using HPLC-DAD and LC-MS. Prior experience with chemical transformation, molecular simulation, photochemistry, and natural organic matter are desired.
b. Environmental fate and transport of contaminants with special focus on PFAS (per- and polyfluorinated substances) and microplastics. For PFAS, the work will focus on fate and transport of PFAS in the environment, which asks for interest in interfacial sciences and analytical experience with LC-MS and sample preparation as well as. The candidate is expected to work closely with another PhD student who is extensively working on trace analysis of organic contaminants. For microplastics, the candidate will focus on the fate of MPs in environmental conditions. A valid driver’s license and >2 years of a good driving record are helpful but not required. If you are plying to this direction, please indicate your driving experience and record.
Applicants should have excellent reading, listening, speaking, and writing skills of English. In addition, candidates are expected to collaborate with scientists from other department and universities, and are ready to travel occasionally.
