Research area: Application of Machine Learning for Water Quality Modeling and Climate Change Impact Assessment

Job description:
The University of Windsor’s School of the Environment (SOE) and the Great Lakes Institute for Environmental Research (GLIER) are seeking motivated graduate students at M.Sc. or Ph.D. levels to conduct research on (i) the application of data-driven methods to forecast water quality variations and the occurrence of harmful algal blooms (HABs) in the Great Lakes and (ii) the assessment of climate change impacts on water quality and water budget of the Great Lakes. Selected candidates will be advised by Dr. Ali Saber and Dr. Aaron Fisk. Students will receive full support, including stipends and tuition coverage via research and teaching assistantships.

The University of Windsor’s SOE and GLIER have world-class research facilities and strong ties with NOAA Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory (GLERL) and the Cooperative Institute for Great Lakes Research (CIGLR). Selected candidates will have the opportunity to interact with distinguished researchers in environmental modeling, water quality, and aquatic ecology. The graduate programs at SOE and GLIER are designed to develop professional competence and equip students with skills to solve the technical problems of society and the global environment.

Qualifications
Motivated candidates with a relevant background in science or engineering are encouraged to apply. Ideal candidates will possess demonstrated proficiency in programming, particularly in MATLAB or Python, along with experience in machine learning, data mining, and statistical modeling. Prior experience in water quality analysis, aquatic chemistry, and ecohydrology is considered an asset for prospective Ph.D. students.
