Job Description

A new postdoctoral research associate position is available in the Research Group of Professor Tanju Karanfil in the Department of Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences at Clemson University. The primary responsibility will be to work on interdisciplinary research projects related to disinfection by-products (DBPs) formation and control in distribution systems and after prescribed and wildfires. Experience with DBPs (regulated and unregulated), the use of related analytical equipment (e.g., GC/MS/MS, LC/MS/MS, GC/ECD, etc..), various aspects of natural organic matter (e.g., effects of fires, watershed hydrology, characterization) and strong organic chemistry background are highly desired. The candidate must be able to work independently and collaboratively with a dynamic research group, possess strong problem-solving skills, and have publications and conference presentations.

There are also opportunities to participate in research on cutting-edge emerging environmental technologies and challenges (e.g., nanobubbles, PFAS, AI-enabled water/wastewater treatment, microplastics, etc.). In addition to research, the successful candidate will be expected to coordinate activities in the research group, write progress reports, draft manuscripts for publication, and present results at sponsor meetings and professional conferences.

The candidate must have a Ph.D. degree in environmental chemistry, environmental/chemical engineering, or closely related fields. This is a one-year appointment with potential renewal for the second and third years.
