Job Description

The School of Engineering and Technology at Central Michigan University (CMU) is seeking energetic and self-motivated MS level graduate students to assist with the development of novel Anaerobic Membrane Reactor (AnMBR) configuration to treat blackwater, monitor pathogens and recover energy. The anticipated start date for the position is August 15, 2024 and review of applications will begin immediately.

Candidates with previous experiences in AnMBR, membrane processes, and anaerobic digestion as well as quantification of the chemical contaminants and biological pathogens are particularly sought. A BS in environmental, molecular biology, chemical and biological engineering, or a closely related field is required. Required qualifications include experience working in a biological and chemical laboratory setting, and data analysis. Familiarity with the following techniques is also desired but not required: Gas chromatography, ion chromatograph, DNA extraction, microbial community analysis, quantitative PCR analysis, and culture-based enumeration and experience with statistical optimization and data analysis. Prior coursework, research, and/or work experience with microbiology and/or bioprocessing (anaerobic digestion, fermentation, etc.) and previous experience in water and wastewater analysis and characterization are desirable.

Applicants should have a strong academic record and excellent written and oral English communication skills and be highly motivated, independent, and self-directed. The position will involve independent and collaborative research, preparation and submission of peer-reviewed manuscripts for publication.
