Job Description

Position Overview:

The Department of Civil, Structural, and Environmental Engineering at Trinity College Dublin invites applications for PhD studentships starting in September 2024. The successful candidate will focus on research related to anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) for wastewater treatment and resource recovery. The project aims to develop an energy-efficient autotrophic biological nitrogen removal process with significant potential for resource recovery. The successful candidate will join an active research group at Trinity College Dublin, working under the supervision of Prof. Muhammad Ali. Prof. Ali’s group is a multidisciplinary team with experience and expertise in the fields of environmental modelling, wastewater treatment, microbial ecology, and applied bioinformatics.

Funding Information:

This project is funded by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI).

Qualifications:

  • MSc degree in environmental engineering, environmental microbiology, or related fields.
  • Post-qualification industrial experience is preferred.

Knowledge & Experience:

  • Experience operating bioreactors is required.
  • Familiarity with anammox bioreactors is highly advantageous.
  • Familiarity with bioelectrochemical systems is advantageous
  • Proficiency with molecular biological tools (e.g., DNA, RNA extraction, PCR, FISH) is encouraged.
  • Laboratory experience and knowledge of lab safety practices are essential.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Strong analytical and communication skills (written and oral English).
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team setting.
  • Capacity to supervise graduate students, prepare manuscripts, and present findings at national and international conferences.
