Job Description

A Postdoctoral Scientist position is anticipated in the Department of Environmental Sciences. The individual will investigate the fundamental mechanisms and processes involved in colloidal activated carbon (CAC)-based injection technologies recently introduced for in situ remediation of groundwater. Specifically, the individual will be a lead researcher on a Department of Defense SERDP grant (ER21-1224; SID 34986) on sorption/desorption behavior of chlorinated solvents relevant to bioavailability with a goal to characterize the critical links between sorption to CAC and biodegradation. The individual is expected to design and carry out productive research, write progress reports, submit manuscripts for publication, present results at scientific conferences, and proactively assume the position of the group’s liaison among the collaborating institutions. We are seeking a creative and independent individual with strong interests in fundamental physical-chemical processes. Background and interests in microbiological processes and techniques related to contaminant remediation would be considered a strong plus because the successful candidate will be working closely with environmental microbiologists. Applicant must have a Ph.D. degree in chemical/environmental engineering, environmental science, soil science, or closely-related field. Applicant must have a background in carbonaceous sorbents, sorption processes, and related analytical experience. Applicants must have a record of effective oral and written communication skills and a strong publication record. Starting annual salary is $56,982 and comes with attractive benefits. The appointment is for one year. Interested persons should submit electronic copies consolidated in a single pdf file of: 1) a letter of application specifically addressing how the applicant has the required experience and meets the job requirements specified above; 2) a CV; 3) one example of a published or in-print paper; and 4) contact information for at least three professional references, to Dr. Joe Pignatello, joseph.pignatello@ct.gov. Incomplete applications will not be considered. The closing date is October 11, 2024, but review of applications will begin immediately.
