Job Description

We seek a motivated postdoctoral scholar to join the Haig Lab(https://www.haiglab.net/) and work on an NSF CAREER project (https://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward?AWD_ID=2336124&HistoricalAwar…). More specifically, this interdisciplinary project will test the hypothesis that drinking water opportunistic pathogens (e.g., NTM) which survive chemical oxidant stressor (COS) exposure during water disinfection will be better at causing disease due to the similarities between the COS found in the human body during infection and drinking water treatment and distribution disinfection processes. The position will require you to collaborate with an interdisciplinary team, including a local drinking water utility, to tackle research that incorporates microbiology, environmental engineering, and chemistry. The position will be through the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at the University of Pittsburgh with PI Haig.

Start Date: as soon as possible, no later than January 2025
Length of term: 1 year (with potential to extend, depending on funding and performance)
Primary Advisor: Dr. Sarah Haig, Assistant Professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering
Qualifications:
• PhD in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Microbiology, Public Health, or a related field.
• Effective written and oral communication skills.
• Ability to work independently to tackle research tasks as well as collaborate with an interdisciplinary team.
• Experience with 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing, metatranscriptomics, drinking water treatment processes, and/ or environmental culturing is preferred.

Applications should include: 1) a cover letter; 2) CV; and 3) contact details for at least two references. Review of applications will begin immediately. For further information or questions about this position please contact: Dr. Sarah Haig (sjhaig@pitt.edu).
