Dr. Matthew Landsman invites applications for a graduate research assistantship (Ph.D. students are preferred, although M.S. students will be considered) in the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment at Arizona State University. Two positions are available to begin in Spring 2025 (or possibly in Summer/Fall 2025) and research projects will combine topics in water quality, membrane separations/fouling, interfacial chemistry, and engineering design to advance technologies for water reuse, resource recovery, and environmental remediation.
The ideal candidate will have B.S. and M.S. degrees in environmental engineering, chemical engineering, chemistry, materials science, or other relevant fields. Previous research experiences in water quality, polymer/membrane science, and analytical chemistry (solution- and solid-phase analyses) are preferred. Interest and experience with synchrotron investigation of polymers and/or environmental materials will also be valuable, as opportunities will be available for students to perform experiments at user facilities (e.g., ALS, SSRL) to support their research. Additional opportunities will be available for students to collaborate with researchers at and beyond ASU, including those in the Arizona Water Innovation Initiative. Successful candidates will receive full funding support including tuition, a stipend, and benefits.
Prospective candidates are encouraged to email Dr. Matthew Landsman (mrlandsman@asu.edu) with the following application materials:
1. A cover letter detailing their research/career goals and how this opportunity will contribute to these goals;
2. A curriculum vitae or resume;
3. Names and contact information for two references;
4. PDFs of any relevant peer-reviewed publications (maximum three).
Review of applications will begin as they are received and continue until the position is filled. Successful candidates must meet the admission requirements to the civil, environmental, and sustainable engineering program at ASU, outlined here: https://degrees.apps.asu.edu/masters-phd/major/ASU00/ESCIVILPHD/civil-e…
Dr. Matthew Landsman will begin as an Assistant Professor in the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment at ASU in January 2025. He is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Advanced Light Source at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, where he develops and utilizes x-ray scattering and spectroscopic techniques to study environmental processes. Dr. Landsman received his Ph.D. in environmental engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 2022, where he advanced membrane materials/processes for targeted separations and fouling mitigation during water reuse. Additionally, Dr. Landsman has performed field research in urban and rural communities across the United States to address legacy and emerging challenges in water treatment.
