PhD Assistantship in Paleoclimatology at Clemson University
Employer: Clemson University, Department of Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences
Location: Clemson University, Clemson, South Carolina, USA
The Multiproxy Archive of Tropical Cyclones, Climate, and Hazards Lab at Clemson University is seeking Ph.D. students interested in research reconstructing paleohurricanes during the mid- to late Holocene and Common Era. This research will focus on one or more of the following aspects of paleotempestology: storm frequency and intensity, tropical cyclone hydroclimate, and tropical-cyclone-induced river flooding. Successful candidates will use a combination of field work, lab work, and data analytics to understand the patterns and climatic drivers of tropical cyclone activity and hazards over multidecadal to millennial timescales.
The ideal student will have completed an M.Sc. in geosciences, geology, geography, atmospheric sciences, or a related field prior to starting the Ph.D. program at Clemson University. Moreover, the candidate should have experience working with paleoclimate proxies, especially those derived from sediment or tree-ring records. Applicants must be motivated to conduct research in paleoclimatology and natural hazards. As it is critical to share research findings, candidates require strong written and verbal communication skills. Experience with a programming language (e.g., MATLAB, R, Python, etc.) is strongly recommended.
Interested potential Ph.D. students should contact Dr. Joshua Bregy (jbregy@clemson.edu) before applying to the Graduate College at Clemson University. Please provide your CV and a short statement on your academic interests and research experience. While not required, unofficial transcripts or a list of relevant courses would be helpful.
