Michigan Technological University is seeking a postdoctoral research scholar to contribute to an interdisciplinary project at the intersection of marine microbial ecology, environmental microbiology, and environmental and marine engineering. This project is part of a large interdisciplinary team aimed at developing a system for conversion of marine dissolved organic matter into electricity using microbial fuel cells. We are looking for a postdoctoral research associate who can coordinate efforts to design, construct, test, optimize and characterize the ability of innovative microbial fuel cells to produce electricity from dissolved organic matter in marine environments at bench, pilot, and full scales.
Candidates should hold a PhD in environmental engineering or a related field. The successful candidate will have demonstrated expertise in the fabrication, characterization, and/or operation of bioelectrochemical systems. It is preferred that candidates also have experience in one or more of the following arenas: the performance of microbial community analyses and engineering and bioinformatics; the application of anaerobic microbiological techniques; the use of analytical equipment or deployed environmental sensors; the performance of biochemical tests; the performance of molecular biology assays; and/or the design, fabrication, and operation of laboratory- or pilot-scale bioreactors. Postdocs will be expected to mentor graduate students and participate in an interdisciplinary research environment and will be supported in career development activities. Note that our research team is also seeking post-doctoral scholars to work on the same project in the areas of dissolved organic matter biogeochemistry (https://www.employment.mtu.edu/en-us/job/493732/postdoctoral-scholar-di…) and environmental microbiology (https://www.employment.mtu.edu/en-us/job/493728/postdoctoral-scholar-en…). Additionally, we are recruiting Ph.D. students in the areas of bioelectrochemical systems (see the posting on this site), dissolved organic matter biogeochemistry, and environmental microbiology.
Start date is expected to be December 1, 2024 or later. Review of applications will be ongoing until the position is filled. Please submit application materials through the official Michigan Tech job posting (link below). Questions may be directed to Dr. Jennifer Becker (jgbecker@mtu.edu).
