Job Description

Research focus:

The Department of Biology at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) invites highly motivated applicants for a Ph.D. studentship (starting January 2026) focused on biopolymer production for alternative packaging and biomedical materials. This project will explore and optimize scalable biopolymer production from renewable resources. Research will encompass biosynthesis, characterization of biopolymer properties, development and testing of novel packaging materials, and investigation of biomedical applications such as drug delivery and tissue engineering. A life-cycle assessment will evaluate the environmental impact and sustainability of the developed biopolymers, aiming for scalable, eco-friendly alternatives to traditional plastics.

Eligibility requirements:

Eligible candidates should possess a strong background in microbiology, biochemistry, polymer science, or related disciplines, and a first-class bachelor's degree (or preferably a master's degree) in Biotechnology, Environmental Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, or a closely related field, with a minimum GPA of 3.4/4.0. Experience in laboratory techniques relevant to biopolymer production and characterization is highly desirable. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are essential, as is the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
