The University of Arizona, Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering is looking to recruit motivated graduate students to learn and perform research on water reuse topics under the direction of Professors Andrea Achilli and/or Kerri Hickenbottom.
Professors Achilli and Hickenbottom lead the Water Resiliency Program at the University of Arizona and perform their research mainly at the Water and Energy Sustainable Technology (WEST) Center. With the vision to provide secure, safe, and sustainable water for all, the program has the mission to create and sustain water resiliency through transformative research and education in science, engineering, and technology innovations, with a particular focus on achieving water resiliency and self-sufficiency through the advancement of water reuse, especially potable water reuse. We conduct world-class research on developing advanced technologies for water reuse integrating data analytics, on improving detection and treatment of viruses, pathogens, and emerging chemical contaminants, and on educating a skilled workforce invested in the formation of partnerships to facilitate technology that supports national water security.
Possible research topics include:
- Decentralized and autonomous potable water reuse systems
- Electrified processes for concentrate management
- Data science in membrane processes
- Integrated solar thermal desalination
- Water and energy in data centers
- Pathogens and chemicals transport through membranes
- Life cycle and technoeconomic assessments
