Job Description

Wildland-urban interface fires release various contaminants of emerging concerns and alter the biogeochemical cycle of elements in the environment, with potential implications for environmental and human health. However, questions remain as to how Wildland-urban interface fires affect the speciation, mobilization, and environmental and human health. A high-quality Ph.D student is being sought to perform research in the area of wildfire and environmental nanoscience, including field- and lab based-work and sample collection, preparation, and analysis using advanced analytical techniques such as inductively coupled plasma-time of flight-mass spectrometry and synchrotron x-ray absorption spectroscopy. The project will have a strong field component that can be supplemented with laboratory simulation experiments. The Ph.D student will collaborate with faculty across the University of South Carolina and elsewhere as well as with beamline scientist at various synchrotron facilities.

REQUIRED/DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
• Holding a master’s degree in a relevant field.
• Prior research experience related to environmental science.
• Strong analytical and quantitative background
• A willingness to learn new things, challenge yourself, and operate in a team environment is critical.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team, with strong communication (oral and written), and fast leaning skills.

Required application materials:
• Curriculum Vitae (CV)
• Short cover letter detailing research interest, analytical and quantitative skills, and fit to the research topic
• Unofficial academic transcripts
• Unofficial English proficiency test (for non-native English speakers)
• Unofficial GRE scores
• Names and contact information of three professional references
