The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at South Dakota State University invites applicants for a fully funded PhD student position in environmental engineering beginning in Fall 2026. The successful candidate will join the research group of Dr. Christopher Schmit (https://www.sdstate.edu/directory/christopher-schmit). The PhD student will work on emerging contaminants (e.g. PFAS, microplastics) related research in stormwater and other mediums and gain practical experience working in a wastewater treatment facility.
Required Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in environmental engineering or a closely related field.
- Strong technical writing and communication skills.
- Ability to conduct research independently.
- Experience in analyzing water and wastewater samples including some experience with analytical instruments.
- Possession of a driver’s license and vehicle or ability to obtain them upon arrival.
- English test score (TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo) is required for international applicants.
