JOB DESCRIPTION

The Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC, invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position in Dr. Jacelyn Rice-Boayue’s Research Group (https://www.riceboayuelab.com/). The successful candidate will conduct research on the predictive assessment of contaminant risk, including PFAS and DBP precursors, and on the environmental and anthropogenic drivers of contaminant occurrence and transport in surface waters supplying drinking water sources. The research combines field-based measurements, advanced analytical chemistry, and hyperspectral and geospatial analyses to characterize contaminant behavior, source contributions, and fate and transport dynamics. The postdoctoral researcher will also have opportunities for professional development, including mentoring undergraduate and graduate researchers, contributing to grant proposals, and presenting research findings through seminars and guest lectures.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The postdoctoral researcher will lead interdisciplinary research projects, coordinate field and laboratory studies, analyze data, prepare manuscripts and conference presentations, contribute to grant proposals, and mentor undergraduate and graduate researchers in laboratory, field, and environmental data analysis methods. Additional responsibilities include supporting research planning and coordination, and communicating research results to both academic audiences and water sector stakeholders.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in environmental engineering, water resources, chemical engineering, or a closely related field. Required qualifications include strong written and oral communication skills, as well as the ability to work independently and collaboratively within interdisciplinary teams. Preferred qualifications include laboratory experience quantifying contaminants in water, fieldwork in hydrology or water quality, expertise in modeling contaminant fate and transport, and proficiency in scientific computing and programming (e.g., Python, R, MATLAB). Experience with statistical, geospatial, and remote sensing analyses, including hyperspectral imaging and machine learning, is highly desirable. Experience mentoring undergraduate or graduate students is also preferred.

POSITION DETAILS

The initial appointment is for one year with the possibility of extension, and the salary will be commensurate with experience.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

Interested applicants should email Jacelyn Rice-Boayue (jjrice@ncsu.edu) with a single PDF attachment containing a cover letter describing research interests, relevant experience, and career goals; a curriculum vitae; and the contact information for three references. Please use the subject line “RB Lab Postdoc Application [Your Name]” in the email submission. Review of applications will begin February 9th and will continue until the position is filled.
