Position Description

The Environmental Biotechnology research group in the Department of Civil, Environmental and Construction Engineering (CECE) and Water Resources Research Center (WRRC) at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa (UHM) has one fully funded Ph.D. positions available starting in Fall 2026. The focus of the research group is on (1) resource recovery in centralized wastewater facilities and (2) development of next-generation onsite wastewater treatment systems. The selected candidate will receive a competitive research assistant stipend, a full tuition waiver, and life insurance and other student benefits.

Qualifications

Successful candidates should have a B.S. and M.S. degree in environmental science and engineering, or a related field. Previous research experience in environmental engineering, biological processes, environmental chemistry, and environmental microbiology is preferred. The research projects involve advanced knowledge and skills in process engineering, mathematical modeling, molecular microbiology, and analytical chemistry. Applicants need to meet the graduate admission requirements, including GPA and language proficiency. GRE score and FE/PE certification are optional.
