Position Description

The Environmental Biotechnology Group in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Washington State University has one (1) fully funded Ph.D. position available starting in Fall 2026. Advised by Dr. Kuang Zhu, the successful candidate will work on engineering microbiomes in bioreactors to recover resources from organic waste, utilizing knowledge and skills in process engineering, mathematical modeling, and molecular biology. The selected candidate will receive a competitive research assistant stipend, a full tuition waiver, and other student benefits.

Application Requirements

Successful candidates should have a B.S. in environmental engineering, bioengineering (or chemical engineering with a bioengineering focus), microbiology, or a related field. An M.S. degree and previous research experience in these fields are preferred but not required.
