This research project focuses on the design, implementation, and monitoring of vegetated green infrastructure systems for wastewater treatment in cold-climate environments. The successful candidate will conduct research to optimize nature-based treatment systems for removing contaminants from wastewater, including pathogens, nutrients, and emerging contaminants. The project will also integrate low-cost smart sensors, Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled data platforms, and real-time control systems to support adaptive water quality monitoring and active treatment management.

The student will gain hands-on experience through laboratory, greenhouse, and field-based experiments. During graduate training, the student will conduct independent research and work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team of researchers and staff. The MSc student will be expected to produce technical reports, present research findings at conferences, and publish in high-impact peer-reviewed journals.

The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary team of researchers at the University of Guelph and will be supervised by Dr. Wenxi Liao (https://ses.uoguelph.ca/people/wenxi-liao) and Dr. David McCarthy (https://ses.uoguelph.ca/people/david-mccarthy).

Required qualifications and experience:

  • A bachelor’s degree in environmental/chemical/civil engineering, environmental science, environmental microbiology, analytical chemistry, or a related discipline.
  • At least a B+ average in the undergraduate degree.
  • Fulfilled the University of Guelph’s minimum English language proficiency requirements.
  • A strong interest in applied research related to water quality and nature-based solutions
  • Prior research experience in laboratory analysis and field or greenhouse monitoring related to water or environmental systems.
