Job Description

One fully funded Ph.D. Graduate Research Assistant position is available in the Environmental Engineering program at Oregon State University. The student will work with Dr. Xue Jin on an NSF CAREER project focused on wildfire-resilient drinking water treatment.

The project will investigate how wildfire-derived dissolved organic matter and metals affect membrane fouling and drinking water treatment performance. The research will integrate membrane filtration experiments, advanced chemical characterization, physicochemical modeling, and artificial intelligence–enabled predictive tools to identify indicators of fouling risk and support more resilient water treatment operations.

Applicants should have a B.S. or M.S. degree in environmental engineering, civil engineering, chemical engineering, chemistry, materials science, or a closely related field. Experience in one or more of the following areas is preferred: water and wastewater treatment, membrane processes, environmental chemistry, organic matter characterization, high-resolution mass spectrometry, data analysis, machine learning, or scientific programming. Applicants should also demonstrate strong research motivation, analytical skills, written and oral communication abilities, and the capacity to work independently and collaboratively.

The position is supported by a five-year NSF project and includes a competitive graduate stipend, tuition remission, health insurance, and opportunities for conference travel and professional development. The preferred starting term is Fall 2026 or Winter 2027.

Interested applicants should email the following materials to Dr. Xue Jin at xue.jin@oregonstate.edu:

  1. Curriculum vitae
  2. Unofficial academic transcripts
  3. A one-page statement describing research experience, interests, and career goals
  4. Names and contact information for two or three references

Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. Additional information about Oregon State University’s graduate admission requirements is available through the university’s graduate admissions website.
