A new fully funded graduate student position is available in the Ersan Research Group (ERL) in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of North Dakota. The research will focus on the detection, fate, and control of emerging contaminants in water and wastewater, including disinfection byproducts (DBPs), per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), and pesticides/herbicides, through externally funded research projects.
The successful candidate will contribute to experimental research involving the detection and treatment/control of emerging contaminants in water, wastewater matrices, and potable water reuse applications. Particular emphasis will be placed on PFAS, while opportunities will also be available to work on DBPs and pesticide/herbicide, and other contaminants. Candidates with prior experience in PFAS experimental research and a strong background in chemistry are particularly encouraged to apply.
The candidate will be expected to:
- Conduct laboratory and experimental research related to the detection, fate, and control of emerging contaminants in water and wastewater.
- Develop and apply analytical methods for contaminants such as PFAS, DBPs, pesticides, and herbicides.
- Work independently as well as collaboratively within a dynamic and interdisciplinary research group.
- Demonstrate strong problem-solving, analytical, and critical-thinking skills.
- Communicate effectively with external collaborators and project sponsors.
- Coordinate research activities within the research group and assist with laboratory management.
- Prepare progress reports, manuscripts, presentations, and other project deliverables.
- Present research findings at sponsor meetings, professional conferences, and other scientific forums.
The candidate must have:
- An undergraduate degree in Chemistry, Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, or a closely related field.
- A strong chemistry background and interest in environmental contaminant research.
- Experience with, or strong interest in, experimental research involving PFAS or other emerging contaminants.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- The ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative research team.
Additional experience with analytical chemistry, water/wastewater treatment, environmental chemistry, chromatography/mass spectrometry, or contaminant detection and treatment will be considered an asset.
