The Microbial Interactions in Water Lab (https://tulane.theopenscholar.com/miwlab) in the Department of River-Coastal Science and Engineering at Tulane University has an opening for a funded PhD student starting in January or May 2027. The PhD position will be based at Tulane’s Uptown Campus in New Orleans. We encourage applications from candidates with interest in microbial electrochemistry, biogeochemistry, micro/nanofabrication, and water infrastructure. Our work on interdisciplinary research projects can be suitable for students with varying backgrounds (e.g. environmental engineering, chemical engineering, biology, microbiology, biochemistry, biotechnology, and geology)

The ideal candidate will have:

  • M.S. degree in environmental engineering, microbiology or a related field
  • Strong personal initiative and excellent communication skills
  • Comfort and experience working in a wet microbiology laboratory space
  • Experience or interest in learning to use microfabrication techniques to make tools to study microbial interactions
  • Experience or interest in microbial ‘omics methods
  • Curiosity!
