The research group of Dr. Dilara Hatinoglu in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Auburn University invites applications for two fully funded PhD/MS student positions, beginning in Spring 2027 or Fall 2027. Our group connects fundamental understanding of contaminant properties, material surface chemistry, and interfacial interactions with the development of sustainable water treatment technologies. Prospective students interested in one or more of the following research areas are encouraged to apply:
- PFAS fate, transport, treatment, and destruction
- Activated carbon adsorption and regeneration
- Thermal treatment of PFAS-laden treatment residuals
- Microplastics and nanoplastics in environmental and engineered systems
- Magnetic nanoparticles for environmental hyperthermia applications
Students will receive close mentorship and have opportunities to help shape research directions in a growing group. They will develop skills in experimental design, analytical methods, materials characterization, and scientific communication, with opportunities for fieldwork, modeling, and collaboration with utility partners and interdisciplinary researchers. Applicants should hold a BS or MS in Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science, or a closely related field by the anticipated start date. Strong analytical skills, curiosity, initiative, and effective written and verbal communication are valued.
