The lab of Doug Call at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina has funding for a graduate student starting January 1, 2027. The project focuses on removing phosphorus from industrial wastewater using phosphorus accumulating organisms (PAOs). The work will involve hands-on experimental evaluation of a variety of microbial enrichment cultures and wastewater types. Identification of microorganisms using DNA sequencing methods will be used. The project is funded by the NSF Science and Technologies for Phosphorus Sustainability (STEPS) Center led by NC State (https://steps-center.org/). The student will be a part of the Center and have opportunities to collaborate and network with STEPS researchers across the country.
The ideal candidate will have a prior degree (BS and/or MS) in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology or a related field, and previous experience with hands-on microbiological research. Candidates interested in pursuing a PhD are preferred, but MS candidates will also be considered.
Prospective students are welcome to email Doug Call (dfcall@ncsu.edu) their CV, unofficial transcripts, and a cover letter describing their research interests, relevant experience, career goals, and why they are interested in joining the project.
