PhD Position in Environmental Engineering: PFAS Destruction, Plastic Upgrading, and Advanced Water Treatment

Job Type
Graduate
Job Institution
Rice University
Job Description

The Catalysis and Nanomaterials Laboratory led by Professor Michael S. Wong at Rice University in Houston, Texas, is seeking motivated PhD students interested in advanced water treatment technologies, with particular emphasis on the destruction of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and other persistent environmental contaminants. The anticipated start date is Fall 2027.

Our research focuses on developing catalytic and photocatalytic technologies for the destruction of persistent contaminants in water. We combine fundamental investigations of reaction mechanisms, catalyst synthesis and characterization, and experimental reactor development to advance treatment technologies from laboratory studies toward practical applications.

Depending on the research project, PhD students may work on:

  • PFAS destruction and defluorination: Investigating the degradation of PFAS and other persistent contaminants through photocatalytic and related catalytic processes.
  • Photocatalyst development: Synthesizing and characterizing advanced materials, including boron nitride-based catalysts, metal oxides, and composite materials.
  • Reaction mechanisms: Studying catalyst–contaminant interactions, reaction kinetics, transformation products, and the effects of water chemistry on treatment performance.
  • Reactor development and scale-up: Designing and evaluating batch, continuous-flow, and pilot-scale water treatment systems.
  • Water quality analysis: Applying analytical techniques to quantify contaminant removal, transformation products, and defluorination in synthetic and real water matrices.
  • Students will have opportunities to collaborate with interdisciplinary researchers through the Rice WaTER Institute and the Rice PFAS Abatement and Replacement Center (Rice PAR).

Qualifications

Applicants with backgrounds in environmental engineering, chemical engineering, chemistry, materials science, or related fields are encouraged to apply.

Experience or interest in one or more of the following areas is desirable:

  • Photocatalysis, heterogeneous catalysis, or advanced oxidation processes
  • PFAS treatment or emerging contaminant research
  • Catalyst synthesis and materials characterization
  • Water treatment reactor design and experimental research
  • Analytical chemistry, including LC-MS/MS or ion chromatography
  • Reaction kinetics and mechanistic investigations

Prior PFAS research experience is not required. We value scientific curiosity, independent thinking, careful experimental work, effective communication, and the ability to collaborate across disciplines.
