Graduate Research Opportunities in Environmental Engineering

Institution: Texas A&M University–Kingsville
Anticipated start: Spring or Fall 2027
Eligibility: U.S. citizens and U.S. permanent residents only, due to funding requirements.

The Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering at Texas A&M University–Kingsville is seeking motivated graduate students (M.S./Ph.D.) to conduct research on the fate and transport of micro- and nanoplastics and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in agricultural environments and on stormwater treatment systems.

About the Lab

Our lab studies the mechanistic controls on the transport, transformation, and partitioning of emerging contaminants in complex environmental systems. We integrate geochemical, hydrodynamic, and organic matter frameworks to inform predictive models and sustainable management strategies. For more information, visit the lab website.

Research Focus

Students will contribute to projects examining contaminant movement in agricultural systems and developing treatment approaches to protect soil and water quality. Key research areas include:

  • Investigating the fate, transport, and retention of micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) and PFAS in agricultural systems.
  • Understanding interactions between other pollutants and weathered microplastics and their influence on contaminant mobility.
  • Examining how soil properties, water chemistry, and hydrologic conditions influence contaminant mobility.
  • Connecting laboratory experiments and field investigations to practical agricultural management challenges.
  • Evaluating stormwater treatment systems and treatment media for contaminant removal.

Responsibilities

Graduate researchers will design and conduct experiments, collect and analyze environmental samples, interpret data, and communicate findings through peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations. Students should be comfortable working in laboratory and field settings and collaborating with other researchers.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree in Environmental, Civil, Agricultural, or Chemical Engineering; Environmental Science; Chemistry; Marine Science; or a closely related field. Applicants with non-engineering degrees must have substantial undergraduate coursework in college-level mathematics, physics, and chemistry.
  • Strong interest in contaminant fate and transport, environmental chemistry, or water treatment.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.

Prior experience with soil or water sampling, analytical instrumentation, or data analysis is desirable.

How to Apply

Interested applicants should email tonoy.das@tamuk.edu with the subject line “Graduate Research Application – Spring/Fall 2027 – [Your Name]” and include:

  • A current CV.
  • A brief statement describing research interests, relevant experience, and career goals.
