The Aqueous Geochemistry Laboratory in the Department of Geosciences at Stony Brook University invites applications for a fully funded PhD position beginning in Fall 2027.
The student will study iron and magnesium carbonate nucleation and its connections to environmental rock weathering and carbon sequestration. The project will also involve water–rock interaction experiments to investigate the natural enrichment of critical minerals and the geochemical reactions involved in mineral exploration and extraction. The student will work with the PI to guide undergraduate research.
Applicants should have B.S. or M.S. in chemistry, geosciences, environmental science/engineering, or a related field. Applicants may apply through either the Geosciences or Chemistry department. Previous experience in chemistry and wet-chemistry laboratory work is preferred.
If interested, please send a CV, a brief statement of research experience and interests, unofficial transcripts, and standard test scores (e.g. GRE, TOEFL, IELTS) to Dr. Qingyun Li (Email: qingyun.li[at]stonybrook[dot]edu). Candidates whose background aligns well with the position will be invited to submit a formal application through the Stony Brook graduate admissions portal: https://www.stonybrook.edu/geosciences/graduate/apply-now/
