Job Description

The Alvarez-Cohen lab in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley (UCB) is seeking a Postdoctoral Scholar, with a focus on microbiology & molecular biology. The Postdoctoral Scholar will work with funding agencies (National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) and Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP)) focused on biotransformation of environmental contaminants at mixed contaminant sites, including per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and other highly halogenated compounds, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated biphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and chlorinated solvents; we need new approaches that are selective and highly reactive. This project will apply molecular biology, protein engineering, and high-throughput assays to identify aerobic and anaerobic microbial enzymatic-radical systems that can treat multiple classes of pollutants. Pending funding, the Postdoctoral Scholar will help implement a CRISPR-Cas community genome editing tool to study materials exchange in an anaerobic ammonium oxidizing community. In addition, the Postdoctoral Scholar will perform team-based and individual research, oversee day to day laboratory activities, mentor students, present at national conferences, prepare results for publication and assist with grant writing.

Applications for full consideration by the committee will be accepted until Tuesday, September 6, 2022, at 11:59 pm PST.
